Korean Language and Literature

Introduce

The Korean Language and Literature Division was established with the aim of studying the excellence of Korean language and the beauty of Korean literature. The goal of Korean linguistics is to promote excellence of our language through comparative research with other languages, focusing on the principles of Han-gul's resources, structure and function, its originality and utility. And using our writing, we are studying the tradition and literary aesthetics of Korean literature that expresses the life and wisdom of our ancestors, thoughts and emotions, and conflicts in the inner world.Korean language and literature are fundamental studies for globalization of Korean studies and at the same time contribute to the identification of Koreans and the succession of national traditions.

 

Objective / Goal

Through the exploration and study of literary works composed of Korean words and writings, this department tries to emulate the wisdom and character of ancestors and inherit beautiful traditions. And its primary educational goal is to publicize the excellence of Korean language and literature to the world. The second goal is to foster experts in this field through in-depth academic chronology of Korean linguistics and Korean literature.

  • Literary Creative Writing

    Introduce

     Based on the curriculum of three tracks of Literary Creative Writing, Literary Writing ContentsStorytelling, and Children’s Literature, students learn theories and practice their writing in all areas of literary creation including poetry, fiction, criticism, children's literature, play, drama, scenario, cultural content, and storytelling (both master’s and doctoral programs are offered).

     

    Objective / Goal

     Our department aims to train professional literary creators who can open a new chapter of Korean literature in the 21st century, the era of literature, and play a critical role in accelerating the development of the nation's culture.


    Students will become competent writers with their practical skills and knowledge in literary creation, one of the core elements of the culture of our times and an aspect of the fundamental spirit of our society. Further, our goal is to help students to contribute to the fields of the cultural industry and storytelling including TV, advertising, publishing, and video media and to enrich Korea’s culture.





    English Language and Literature

    Introduce

     The department of English Language and Literature offers various curricula for linguistics, British and American literature, and English education in order to build expertise of interdisciplinary studies. Therefore, the curriculum focuses on broadening the background knowledge and developing the ability to use it in the professional fields of society. To implement these broad curricula effectively, the faculty in this department has done their research steadily in their respective fields.

     

    Objective / Goal

     The educational purpose of the department of English language and literature is to provide the comprehensive and professional knowledge needed to demonstrate ability in the areas of linguistics, English literature, and English education. Therefore, the department takes the basic direction of education for students to respond to the new information and consolidate their expertise. In the field of linguistics, the educational focus is on increasing understanding of language through the study of the nature and inner structure of English language. In the field of English literature, the focus is on improving understanding of literary thought by studying various English literary works. In the field of English education, the focus is on understanding English educational theories and applying them into various language teaching and learning fields. The curriculum of English language and literature also aims to enable students to acquire academic knowledge of English and use it in various educational fields. 





    Japanese Language and Literature

    Introduce

     The Japanese Literature Department aims to foster experts on Japanese and Japanese literature. For this purpose, the curriculum was set up to contribute to the development of Japanese literature research by acquiring knowledge of Japanese and Japanese literature. Developing research methods and theories, and exploring data processing capabilities or research history, and teaching methods are also focused on their teaching methods.

     

    Objective / Goal

     The purpose of the Chapter is to contribute to the promotion of international exchange and understanding by producing personnel with leadership personality by teaching and researching the theory. Research methods in Japanese research areas such as Japanese studies and Japanese literature.



    Introduce

     The Department of Chinese Language and Literature which was established in 1972, offers a M.A. degree and Ph.D. degree of Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Literature, and Chinese Culture.
    The Graduate Program aims primarily to improve students' broad understandings on the above areas to develop their research capabilities. M.A. degree was established in 1979, Ph.D degree course established in 1996.

     

    Objective / Goal

     The Graduate Program of the Department of Chinese Languages and Literatures was established with a view to foster students to achieve their goals related to Chinese Languages and Literatures and make them contribute to the growth of international society. 





    Chinese Interpretation and Translation

    Introduce

     The master or/and doctoral course aims to produce professionals on interpretation and translation between Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean in areas where require advanced service such as international conference. The course emphasizes the practical exercise on interpretation and translation between A(source language) and B(target language) language.

     

     The course is divided into 3 stages. The first stage over the first and second semester, aims to build language skills and overall understanding of the culture. The second stage during the second and third semester, encourages how to interpret and translate professionally through a variety of practical exercises such as consecutive interpretation and translation in areas such as business and video. The third stage at last semester, focuses on the programs in the specific areas such as literary translation and simultaneous interpretation regarding international conference. In order to finish the course, a single translated work which is done by individual, should be submitted. 

     

    Objective / Goal

     Following graduation, there are numerous opportunities available whether to work as a freelancer interpreter on international conference or translator on literature, or to be hired as employee in areas such as a public institution, an embassy, or a firm regarding trading, airline, broadcasting and publishing. Otherwise, doctoral degree is another option to carry on the professionalism. Through earning a doctorate in related study such as linguistics, literature, education and regional study, it shows that Alumni in high numbers are currently engaging in education field. Thanks to the facts: the Korean wave and jumping the demands of international conference interpretation and translation markets in both Korea and China, A number of oversea students from China with master degree has tended to increase working at places such as university or foreign affairs in local government.





    Philosophy

    Introduce

     While philosophy pursues eternal and universal truths, tries to explain current day problems from a fundamental point of view, and present principles or at least the direction of its solutions, philosophy has often been questioned for its practicality.
     Therefore, in response to such doubts, the department was established in 2018 with ambition to explore the most important issues of modern and Korean society from a fundamental perspective, suggest directions and principles, and raise philosophy-based interdisciplinary scholars and Korean culture researchers. It was established in the 2018 school year with the goal of education.
     In order to accomplish these educational goals, the department is divided into two majors: the interdisciplinary philosophy and the philosophy of Korean culture. The curriculum consists of common subjects and the major focused subjects.

     

    Objective / Goal

     Our goal is to raise philosophy-based interdisciplinary scholars who can explore the most important issues of modern society from a fundamental perspective, think and fuse science, technology, society, ethics, and arts from philosophical knowledge and present directions and principles for their solution. We also aim to provide Korean culture researchers who look for specific problems in Korean society and seek solutions through the comparison of religion, education, politics, art, and popular culture.





    Korean Literature in Chinese

    Introduce

     In-depth research in the adjacent literature field focuses on Chinese literature, allowing students to systematically understand traditional cultures written in Chinese characters and develop their talents to creatively embrace and develop cultures around the world.

     

    Objective / Goal

     This course studies the writings, prose and novels of Korean poetry, reviews works, compares them with Chinese poetry, and studies the influence of Korean ancestors on the superiority and spirit of ancestors. For the purpose.


     This course expands your understanding of Chinese literature by systematically and in-depth review of key discussions and issues related to Chinese prose, Chinese novels, and Chinese poetry. In addition, students deepen their academic depth by increasing their knowledge of the work and building their knowledge of the subject and background of the work.





    Middle Eastern and African Studies

    Introduce

     The Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies was established in 2017 for the purpose of cultivating specialists equipped with linguistic competence and interdisciplinary research skills in the region of the Middle East and Africa. The program is designed to provide graduate students with effective written and oral communication skills in the major languages of the area (particularly Arabic and Farsi) and the ability to research history, culture, politics and economies in the region. Students are strongly encouraged to have comprehensive understandings of the region and contribute to the cooperation between Korea and the region of the Middle East and Africa. 

     

    Objective / Goal

     The area of the Middle East and Africa is the cradle of civilization and includes Ancient Mesopotamian Civilization, the area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and Ancient Egyptian Civilization. With a long history, different religions and cultures have co-existed in the region to build cultural prosperity and promote sectarian violence. On the basis of interdisciplinary knowledge, the program aims to foster Middle East and Africa specialists with analytical skills and keen insights into the region by providing graduate students with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Faculty members proficient in regional languages and expert knowledge guide students to acquire a foundation of career-oriented skills as well as a high degree of global competency.


     

    Fields of Study

     

    1) Arabic Linguistics

    Arabic Linguistics aims to improve communication and reading comprehension ability in Arabic for graduate school. Graduate students will have opportunities to learn advanced Arabic language, the most widely used language in the Middle East and Africa, by understanding academic terminology in the fields of politics, economy, society, culture and religion.

     

    2) Arabic Literature

    Arabic Literature focuses on the characteristics, genre and literary criticism of Arabic literature. Graduate students will gain an understanding of Arabic feelings and emotions, as well as a broad perspective the Arabic society by reading and analyzing carefully selected prominent Arab writers and their texts that span more than 1,400 years.

    3) Middle Eastern and African History

    Middle Eastern and African History lays the foundation for Middle Eastern and African studies and enhances understanding of the history of the Middle East and Africa, in general. The field also compares and analyzes academic texts from Middle Eastern and African history published in research papers and books. In all, an introduction to a variety of views of the history of the Middle East and Africa from ancient to modern times will be provided.

    4) Middle Eastern and African Culture

    Middle Eastern and African Culture aims to analyze the unique phenomena of Middle Eastern and African society and culture in comparison with other civilizations. This course will give students practical knowledge about how to understand cultural characteristics and differences in the region with intellectual flexibility.

     

    5) Middle Eastern and African Politics

    Middle Eastern and African Politics provides graduate students with opportunities to understand contemporary political issues faced by countries in the Middle East and Africa. The course aims to provide information about the evolution of State and Society in the region and guide students as they develop an ability to analyze the political dynamics of key Middle Eastern and African states.

     

    6) Middle Eastern and African Economy

    Middle Eastern and African Economy offers an introduction to the economic history of the Middle East and Africa from the advent of Islam fourteen centuries ago to the modern era. It examines how the Middle East and Africa have contributed to economic and cultural exchange between the East and the West. In addition, it focuses on the study of the history of oil in the Middle East, initiated by Britain and the U.S. in the 20th century, and analyzes the oil politics of Middle Eastern countries. Furthermore, it looks into how the injection of oil wealth has precipitated political and socio-economic changes in oil producing countries in the Middle East and North Africa. 





    History

    Introduce

     History is not only the studies of historical facts of the past, but also actively interprets them to provide guidance of today through active interpretation. Our department consists of four majors, Korean history, East Asian history, Western history, and Archaeology and Art history. Each major studies history by period and country, and explores historical research methodologies.

     

    Objective / Goal

     Our department acquires the theory and method of historical research to train experts, and to develop the ability to understand and solve various problems of individual, ethnic, national and human society. It also fosters critical eyes so that it can contribute to the nation and the society.





    Education

    Introduce

     By Investigating the classical theory of education and researching and developing new theories, this course aims to promote academic understanding, contribute to the development of pedagogy, and to cultivate knowledge and skills for solving the real problems related to the educational arena.


     The master's and doctoral degrees have five majors such as Sociology of Education and Lifelong Education, Educational Administration, Policy & Leadership, Educational Technology&HRD, Educational Psychology&Learning Consultation, Educational Measurement, Evaluation & Statistics.

     

    Objective / Goal

     The first educational purpose of Department of Education is the research and development of pedagogical theory. It is to contribute to the academic development of pedagogy by studying the existing theories of pedagogy and developing new theories based on the existing theories


    The second is to cultivate the knowledge and personality necessary to solve the real problems of schools. It is to suggest new solutions, and to cultivate excellent human resources in education by studying not only the existing theories but also the real problems of the educational field.





    Special Education

    Introduce

     For over 40 years, we have been cultivating special education experts and rehabilitaion therapists who boast of excellence in both the theory and practice needed to enhance the quality of education provided to children and adults with special needs. Comprised with acclaimed faculty members, our academic research in the general graduate school program is unrivaled, taking the lead in improving special education with a strong academic identity that has produced numerous domestic and international experts through international academic exchanges and cooperation in the field.

    The goals of the Department of Special Education in General Graduate School are :


    Building the personality and professionalism required as future leaders in special education

    Helping students understand the individualized educational needs of people with disabilities, and apply such knowledge to the educational process through field-based learning and experience

    Fostering the capability to instruct, research, and administrate as special education professional

    Developing individualized education programs, and ability to utilize educational media in the use of advanced modern assistive technology.





    Counseling

    Introduce

     We started from “Counseling Psychology Major” of the Dankook University Education Graduate School. In September 2013, the Department of Counseling of Graduation School was newly approved, and in March 2014, we recruited master and doctoral course students.


     We aim to develope practical skills of counseling for training students as professional Counselor. We emphasize human potential and adaptive effort to overcome existing approach that applying medical disease model(mental disorder) for personal behavior problems.


     Academic task of the department is founding new counseling studies based on our educational objective that cultivate professionals who combine research and practical ability. Also, we equipped with personal, group and family-child counseling room and monitoring facility for systemic and intensive counseling training.

     

    Objective / Goal

     We aim to help humans can more effectively solve the problems of suffering that faced in their lives and cultivate professionals in counseling who combine research and practical abilities.

     

     The specific educational objectives to realize our purpose are as follows.

     

     First, foster the excellent counseling specialist who got actual knowledge and skills by systemic counseling practice and supervision.

     

     Second, foster the competent researcher in major of counseling by systemic and profound curriculums for teaching theories and knowledge about counseling and related studies.

     

     Last, contribute to the development of the community by active connection with various local organization related the department.





    Speech-Language Pathology

    Introduce

     Department of speech-language pathology started in 1982 based on the ‘major of hearing & language disordered children education’ and has been divided into speech-language pathology major in 2007. In September 2012, it has been established as a Department of speech-language pathology. More than 200 masters and doctors have been produced since 1982. Graduates faithfully perform their roles as excellent researchers, teachers and therapists in school lecturing and clinical settings. In the Department of speech-language pathology, students are trained in the future-oriented curriculum in order to acquire theoretical knowledge of not only speech-language pathology but also related academic fields. In addition, we are doing our best to make systematic and solid clinical practice process with clinical supervisors who have the outstanding ability and wealth of experience.

     

    Objective / Goal

      In the industrial and aging society, this course intends to cultivate the specialists who are needed for the increasing number of people with congenital & acquired communication disorders. It aims to contribute to society by fostering professional human resources with professional knowledge, qualities and passions for various communication disorders as well as the ability to develop new theories and intervention methods in the field of speech-language pathology.

     Students learn about comparative and international politics, while engaging in various activities to gain a clear understanding of political phenomenon. Our mission is to cultivate future talent capable of fulfilling all types of responsibilities with a forward-looking perspective based on Eastern and Western political philosophy and scientific analysis. Enabling students to actively participate in field trips, academic conventions and debates, students are offered the opportunity to build knowledge, experience and personal networks.

     

    Objective / Goal

     The department aims to enhance students’ understanding and knowledge on various aspects of social science research methods and skills to better equip them to deal with analyzing complex issues and problems in the rapidly changing world. Specifically, the department is designed to cultivate a deep understanding of both the Eastern and Western political thoughts and philosophy, and help them to gain analytical skills to understand political systems and processes by accessing various theories of social science. In addition, through the study of various theories of international relations, students will have an accurate understanding of the world order, and at the same time, they will develop research method and strategic thinking that can promote national interests in the harsh international environment.





    Public Administration



    Introduce

     Our department has two courses for graduate student: Public Administration and Public Policy. The former focuses more on public management such as organizational behaviour, finances and human resources, and the latter on policy making, policy implementing and analyzing. The courses commonly study governmental activities, governance skills, regulatory measures and policy tools concerning relevant solutions to social problems. Careers in Public Administration and Public Policy include public affairs and communications, policy-making and governance, non-profit management of organization and personnel, leadership, local governmental activities and social entrepreneurship. 

     

    Objective / Goal

     The aims of Public Administration and Public Policy are linked to not only democratic values like equality, security and justice, but also applying theory to practical solutions. The purposes of the courses are to make students as experts in analysing the nature and the causes of social problems, disputing current public regulations, making policy solutions or tools and implementing them into the real world. The courses are concerned with the management of public organization and personnel, finance management, the implementation of policy, carrying political activity and decision into actions and developing public programmes in order to solve social problems and enhance the well-being of the citizens. Public Administration and Public Policy make use of several other disciplines such as: organizational behaviour and theory, finances, human resources, politics, law and even ethics, philosophy and statistics.

     

    A Master and Ph.d in Public Administration and Public Policy will help students to pursue careers in the public and the third sectors, working not only in governmental institutions, departments and agencies, but also not-profit organizations, such as the following careers: central and local governmental officers, civil service administrator, social and policy researcher, policy consultant and analyst, community administrator, public affairs consultant, consultant in organization and human resource, budget analyst and urban planner.





    Communication


    Introduce

     Journalism: Journalism majors conduct research in diverse areas of journalism ranging from the process of production and consumption to the evolving nature of news media technologies, its effects on society and many other unanswered questions regarding the profession of journalism.

     

     Media Content: Media content majors conduct research related to the content of various types of media content. Courses cover not only research related traditional media, such as broadcasting, but also to various kinds of digital media, including the internet and mobile media.

     

     Advertising & Public Relations: Advertising majors conduct research related to advertising and promotion. The curriculum provides courses to prepare communication specialists in the areas such as marketing, media management, account planning, and political campaigns. 

     

    Objective / Goal

     The Department of Communications conducts research related to journalism, media content, and advertising & public relations with the aim of fostering academics and professionals who can contribute to the fields of media and communication as well as society, in general. Curriculum also includes both academic and managerial perspectives of mass communication.

    Introduce

     Korea's dependence on trade has remained at a top level compared with OECD members, approximately 90%. Our mission is to cultivate talent who can quickly understand and respond to trends in international trade with a balanced perspective. Graduate curriculum has oriented prominent, professional research analysis on international economics, international trade practice. 

     

    Objective / Goal

     Our goal is to provide graduate students with the in-depth knowledge to become global leaders by guiding them how to learn and research. Graduate students are required to publish papers in a many international trade journals during their course, ultimately become a global outstanding researcher after graduation.
