교수소개

1985년 서울대학교 미생물학과를 졸업하고 1987년 동대학원에서 석사학위를 받았으며 1995년 미국 Cornell 대학 분자생물학과에서 박사학위를 취득하였다. 학위논문의 주제는 RNA를 이용한 HIV의 유전자 치료법 개발이다. 학위 후에는 1994년부터 3년간 Duke 의과대학에서 박사후 연구과정을 거쳤다. 연구과제는 RNA를 이용한 자가면역질환 치료제 개발 및 유전병에 대한 유전자 치료법 개발이었으며 특히 RNA를 이용한 치료제 개발은 신개념의 치료제로서 그 결과가 세계적인 생명공학지인 Nature Biotechnology의 1997년 1월호의 표지에 소개되었다.

1997년 본교 자연과학부 분자생물학 전공교수로 부임하였고, 2016년 2학기부터 대학원 생명융합학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 2003년부터 2009년까지 교내 부설 연구소인 나노센서 바이오텍 연구소 소장을 겸임하였으며, 2014년부터 현재까지 교내 부설연구소인 차세대오믹스 연구소소 소장을 겸임하고 있다. 2017년 8월 교내지주회사 자회사인 바이오벤처기업 알지노믹스(주)를 창업하여 현재 대표이사를 겸직하고 있다.

주관심사 및 현재 연구하는 주요 분야는 유전질환, 종양 및 퇴행성 질환 그리고 바이러스성 질환 등 현재 난치병으로 알려진 여러 인체질환에 대한 RNA를 기반으로 한 신개념의 치료제 개발과 유전자 치료법 개발연구 그리고 새로운 진단법 개발이다. 특히 새로운 유전자 치료제로서 Trans-splicing ribozyme의 개발을 미국 연구진과 공동연구하여 그 결과를 1998년 세계적인 과학저널인 Science에 발표하는 개가를 올렸으며, 2012년도에는 대장암의 간전이를 억제하는 핵산 aptamer를 개발하여 소화기학분야의 최고 권위지인 Gastroenterology 지 해당 이슈의 주요논문으로 발표하였다. 2007년, 2012년, 2014년 범은학술상을 수상하였으며, 2013년 한국연구재단애서 수여하는 기초연구 우수성과 50선에 선정되었으며 2015년 보건복지부 장관 표창상을 수상하였다..

2009년부터 2013년까지 한국핵산학회 부회장, 회장을 역임하였으며, 2019년부터 현재까지 한국유전자세포치료학회 회장을 역임하고 있다. 현재 국제 올리고핵산치료학회의 공식 저명학술지인 Nucleic Acid Therapeutics 및 미국 유전자세포치료학회와 Cell Press에서 발간하는 Molecular Therapy: Nucleic Acid 등 총 8개 국제 학술지의 편집위원으로 활동하고 있다.
